Oedipus The King as Greek Tragedy à â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â The class of show is wide and contains works of changed structures and subjects. The main show, on which every later work are based, created in Greece and managed strict and social issues. As per Aristotleãâ¢s The Poetics, a Greek Tragedy must arrangement with a genuine reason, stimulating a feeling of pity or dread in the crowd. The accentuation must be on plot over character advancement and the writer must use tension and solidarity of time, place what's more, activity. Aristotle composes that a lamentable saint is a character who is eminent what's more, prosperous, not really great, yet not an insidious individual either. The terrible saint must meet with an inversion of fortune achieved by either indiscretion or then again destiny. In view of these models, Oedipus the King by Sophocles is thought of the prototypical Greek Tragedy. Oedipus, the playãâ¢s fundamental character, is moreover thought about the model of a Greek heartbreaking saint. Oedipus the King manages a few genuine purposes, the best of which being the free-thought Sophocles saw in his locale. Through Iokaste who Ã'ãâ°would not squander a second thoughtãâ°Ã£ on prophets, Sophocles shows his crowd the hazards of doubt in the divine beings, since every prediction made by prophets in the play wound up working out (l. 813). Sophocles utilizes his play to perform genuine strict capacities just as to engage theater-goers. The satisfaction of the expectations made by the prophets prompted the destruction of Oedipus, which made a purification in the crowd, brought by stimulating sentiments of pity and dread for the fallen ruler. The Choragos gives the exercise, Ã'ãâ°let none assume on his favorable luck until he discover life, at his passing, a memory without painã (l. 1473-5). This scene permits the crowd to leave the performance center inclination cleansed of their pity and dread. The plot is the most significant segment of Oedipus the Ruler, for what it's worth of each Greek Tragedy. Improvement of characters is auxiliary, and the crowd seldom Ãgets insideã⢠any of the characters. As it were characters pivotal to the plot are presented; there is no incidental activity on stage. This improvement of plot is a test. A tragedian must present a story with which the crowd is as of now recognizable and still make it intriguing

Should You Send the 4 Free ACT Score Reports
Should You Send the 4 Free ACT Score Reports SAT/ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Thereââ¬â¢s nothing of the sort as a free lunch. Or then again is there? At the point when you register for the ACT, you have the choice to send your score reports to four schools for nothing. So doesnââ¬â¢t it bode well to send them? Particularly since the remainder of the school affirmations procedure can be so exorbitant, shouldnââ¬â¢t you set aside cash where you can? Perhaps, yet it could really hurt your applications in case you're not cautious. We will inspect this issue top to bottom and assist you with settling on a brilliant choice concerning whether to utilize the four free ACT score reports or not. Why Students Often Send the Free ACT Reports At the point when you pursue the ACT, you have the choice of picking four universities to send your score reports to. The administration isfree, such a significant number of understudies exploit it. Something else, the reports cost $13 per test date per school. (That implies on the off chance that you need to send scores from two distinct dates to numerous schools, it'll cost $24 per school.) Since most universities require in any event one grade, it can surely set aside you cash on the off chance that you send a portion of the reports for nothing. Moreover, a few understudies believe that sending the free score reports exhibits enthusiasm for a college,as they're sending their scores in as right on time as could be expected under the circumstances. It may likewise persuade understudies to contemplate more earnestly since they realize their scores are being sent directly to their top-decision schools. Reasons Why Sending the Free ACT Reports Could Be Harmful Despite the fact that you can get a good deal on ACT score reports, there are a few reasons why sending them without cautiously considering the universities you send them to can be an unsafe move. It's likewise critical to note thatyouââ¬â¢re not getting any sort of an advantage in the school application process by sending scores early-universities donââ¬â¢t monitor or favor understudies who start their applications prior. This is what Duke says on its affirmations site: 'Shown intrigue,' the measure of contact between an individual and our confirmations office, isn't a factor in our affirmations procedure. What's more, this is what Stanford says: Stanford doesn't consider 'exhibited intrigue' (e.g., visiting grounds, taking an interest in Summer Session, calling or messaging affirmations staff, and so forth.) in settling on confirmation choices. As it were, what makes a difference at long last is the way solid your finished application is-including how high your ACT scores are, which is the place the hazard comes in. The free score reports are sent naturally after your test is scored, so you canââ¬â¢t take the reports back on the off chance that you take a gander at your scores and find that theyââ¬â¢re lower than you needed. This implies a school you may truly need to go to currently has your not exactly heavenly ACT score and you canââ¬â¢t get it back. You're basically losingthe choice to send just your best ACT scores. Except if you need to block the score reports after they've been sent. What's more, sending your free ACT score reports probably won't end up really being that useful. To begin with, you probably won't wind up applying to every one of the four schools you list, particularly if youââ¬â¢re accepting the test as a sophomore or in the fall of your lesser year. High schoolers will in general change their school records a considerable amount before they really apply, so the rundown of your main four schools your lesser fall will probably change by your senior year. Additionally, on the off chance that you retake the ACT, except if you pick precisely the same four schools, youââ¬â¢ll need to resend any new reports in the event that you get a higher score the second time around. Valid, youââ¬â¢re setting aside cash and not squandering cash regardless of whether you send your scores to a school you donââ¬â¢t at last apply to-yet this fair demonstrates the four free ACT score reports are not really an accommodating asset in the event that you don't utilize them carefully. In short, the danger of sending a low ACT score may be higher than the reward(i.e., the cash you save money on sending expenses). In spite of the fact that sending ACT scores is costly, we'll examine ways beneath to alleviate the expenses and make the application procedure progressively moderate all while keeping the ultimate objective of getting into your fantasy school as a primary concern. Sending the 4 Free ACT Score Reports: 2 Options While you donââ¬â¢t need to completely forego sending your free score reports (however that is a choice), you should pick the schools you send your reports to deliberately. We'll talk about the two best choices you have for these score reports underneath. Alternative 1: Don't Send Any ACT Scores Itââ¬â¢s not a terrible choice to simply hold off on sending your four free score reports totally. This is the best way to guarantee that a school won't end up with a low ACT score. Besides, it very well may be difficult to anticipate as a sophomore or junior which schools you will apply to. Truth be told, the main schools you may know without a doubt you'll apply are your fantasy schools-that is, decisively the ones you donââ¬â¢t need to send scores to daze. While you may wind up paying more for score reports not far off, this can be amuch more intelligent decision over the long haul, asyou'll just be sending the scores you need to send to the schools you're really applying to. Not sending your ACT scores quickly can likewise make the test itself less stressful.Youââ¬â¢re the one in particular who will see your scores until further notice. Also, in the event that you have to retake it, you can. No worrying about a school seeing your scores right away! The drawback to Option 1 is that ACT, Inc. doesnââ¬â¢t offer any charge waivers for sending scores, so if sending scores is a budgetary hardship for you, Option 2 may be the better decision. Choice 2: Send ACT Scores to Safety Schools On the off chance that you truly need to exploit those four free score reports, send them to your wellbeing schools-i.e., the ones you're genuinely certain you'll apply to and wonââ¬â¢t experience difficulty getting into. This way, regardless of whether your ACT score is lower than anticipated, you won't hurt your odds of affirmation. Besides, by sending the scores to schools you're certain you'll apply to, youââ¬â¢ll set aside cash when it comes time to apply. For instance, if there's a neighborhood state funded college that youââ¬â¢re positive you will apply to, that ought to be on your rundown of schools to send scores to. On the off chance that conceivable, abstain from sending your four free ACT score reports totop-level schools. For these, you'll need to see your scores first and afterward conclude whether you're retaking the test. This gives you some an ideal opportunity to look at your scores from each time you've taken the ACT,lettingyou at last present your absolute best scores to your most serious schools. Step by step instructions to Save Money on ACT Score Reports Tragically, not at all like the College Board (which controls the SAT), ACT, Inc. doesn't offer any expense waivers for ACT score reports.Whileyou can get a charge waiver for the test itself, it is highly unlikely to send score reports for nothing past the four you get with enrollment. Since ACT, Inc. treats each test date as a different report, it can cost a great deal of cash to send the entirety of your grades to numerous schools. Not all schools expect you to send all your ACT scores, however. On the off chance that they don't, you can set aside cash by simply sending the scores from your best test date. A few schools that require all ACT scores, for example, Stanford and Yale, have strategies set up that let you send one lot of scores and self-report the rest if sending score reports is a monetary weight for you (however for both Stanford and Yale, you'll have toofficially send the remainder of your ACT scores if youââ¬â¢re conceded). Other all-scores schools, be that as it may, aren't as clear about whether they have comparable approaches. In the event that you have numerous ACT scores and one set is quite superior to the others (i.e., it has a higher composite score and higher segment scores), consider erasing the most reduced score with the goal that you just have one (apparently incredible) arrangement of scores to send. This won't simply make you look better to all-scores schools yet will likewise set aside you cash on score reports since you won't have the same number of to send. Different Tips for Sending ACT Score Reports Try to settle your school application list by the fall of your senior year, andgive yourself a lot of time to send your scores so you donââ¬â¢t need to pay the $16.50 surge conveyance charge. (Also that the previous you start the school application process, the less focused on you'll be!) Likewise, don't matter to 20 universities, or some other insane high number. All of those application and test-sending expenses will include, and you won't increment your odds of getting in, particularly in case you're applying to a large number of ultra-serious schools. Instead, try to hold your rundown to 10 or less and try to have a blend of wellbeing schools, likely schools, and arrive at schools. At long last, cautiously examine Score Choiceandall-scores schools. For schools youââ¬â¢re considering applying to, check whether they expect you to send all ACT scores from all test dates, or simply the scores you need to send. What's Next? This country was unified initially as a kingdom under the dynasty of Bagrationi during the 9th to 10th century. Georgia was then fragmented by the end of 1490 into various petty principalities and kingdoms until it wa s finally annexed in 1801 by Russian empire. After searching for independence in 1918 to 1921 with the Georgian democratic republic, it became part of soviet republic for Transcaucasia social federation between 1918 and 1921. The current Georgian republic became independent in 1991 and its first president made Georgian nationalism stronger and vowed to declare the authority of Tbilisi over south Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgia claimed that the jet used for shooting was directed from Gudauta then went back to Russia. This raised controversy between Russia and Georgia as Russia through its foreign affairs minist ry denied the allegations and accused Georgia for violating the agreement about Abkhaziaâs resolutions made by United Nations as they deployed the drone that can be used as a weapon. The Security Council for United Nations failed to solve the dispute but western states such as United States, Germany, France and United Kingdom expressed their concern on its moves on Abkhazia telling Moscow to consider reversing or not implementing its legalization of ties with south Ossetia and Abkhazia. This made Russia to state that it will never reverse its plans. Later on May 2008, a conclusion from an independent investigation from U. N. mission was released and it confirmed that Georgia video footage was authentic saying that Russian jet was responsible for Georgian drone destruction. From the Security Councilâs conclusion, the Georgian government hailed the results of the report while on the other hand, Russian government dismissed the conclusion. Essentialism is Essential in Education Essay - 970 Words
Essentialism is Essential in Education All six of the major educational philosophies Perennialism, Progressivism, Essentialism, Existentialism, Social Reconstruction, and Behaviorism are in my opinion feasible in the classroom. However, I have chosen Essentialism as the primary philosophy I would like to employ in my classroom for several reasons. Although I think all six would result in learning, which is the primary purpose of education, I think that Essentialism is superior to the other five for my classroom. I feel this way because it embraces the purpose or original goal of public education, it allows lessons to be gauged to all different learning styles, and finally because essentialism employs methods of teaching andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I also feel that public education should definitely be standardized because when something is done for the good of the entire public, there has to be a way to determine if all American students are receiving the same basic information so that they will all be equally prepa red to either enter the workforce or further their education. Therefore, public education is, or should be, very important to the American people as it is to me which is one reason why I argue that Essentialism with its standards and curriculums is essential to American education. Another reason I feel essentialism would be the best philosophy to put into action in my classroom is because it can instruct and be useful to all students despite their different learning styles. As a teacher, during a lecture period, I can gauge my lecture first to those students who are auditory learners and who will learn just from my lecture and then perhaps through examples and hands on experiments for those who are kinesthetic learners and so on. Essentialism gives me, as the teacher, this extra power to choose how I will best present the lesson so that all the students will get the most out of it and I think that is very important in a classroom where you have to cater to many different learning styles. The Educated Imagination Chapter 5 Essay - 850 Words
The Spectrums Purpose The fifth chapter of The Educated Imagination, ââ¬Å"The Verticals of Adamâ⬠by Northrop Frye, explains his feelings about the necessity for children to be exposed to some fundamental texts in the literary spectrum in a certain order to best enable them to understand twentieth century society. The understanding of the Christian Bible, and Greek/Roman mythology are said by Frye to be key factors in how a child will interpret future literature. It is noted by Frye that the bible should be taught first, followed by the mythologies of the Greeks/Romans. I agree with his ideas about the order of exposure, as being the foundation of western society as it is best suited to being the foundation for learning of a child from saidâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Knowledge of the major stories present in the bible will continue to benefit any student for the foreseeable future, as the Christian mythology will remain a powerful force in our culture for years to come. For instance, the story of Cain and Abel contains a strong moral lesson about jealousy and family. Understanding a biblical story like this is the reason why the Bible should be taught first in the spectrum, as much of it provides a solid moral lens through which much literature can be successfully interpreted. More clearly than the Bible, Greek/Roman mythology helps outline the life cycle that almost always applies to the traditional archetypal hero. With basic knowledge of the Bible we can determine right from wrong and its influence in real life when reading mythology. As the reader we experience this when seeing the actions the hero takes, as explained by Frye when he states, ... the central myth of the hero whose mysterious birth, triumph and marriage, death and betrayal and eventual rebirth... Mortailty and Eternity in Emily Dickinson Poems Essay
Emily Dickinson is the epitome of the modern poet. Her poetry breaks from the traditional style with dashes to separate ideas. Dickinson, also, challenged the religious belief of her time. Growing up as a Puritan in Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson knew the bible, yet as an adult, she questioned that belief. Many of her poems seem focused on death; death of the body, death of the soul, death of the mind. Why was she so intrigued with death? The poems that embody this theme are: ââ¬Å"Success is counted sweetestâ⬠(#112), ââ¬Å"Safe in the Alabaster Chambersâ⬠(#124), ââ¬Å"I like a look of Agonyâ⬠(#339), ââ¬Å"I felt a funeral in my brainâ⬠(#340), ââ¬Å"Because I could not stop for deathâ⬠(#479), and ââ¬Å"I heard a Fly buzz-when I diedâ⬠(#591). These poems seem toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Later in life, especially after the death of her father, she secluded herself to her room. During this time, she wrote over one-thousand seven-hundred poems, which were organized in a packet called fascicles. Only a few of her poems were published within her lifetime, but after they were revised into more of a conventional means, she stopped seeking to be published. Themes that seem to repeat themselves in Dickinsonââ¬â¢s poems are religion, love, nature, and death. Though, in the one-thousand seven hundred poems that Dickinson wrote she seemed to be intrigued about death. Many of the poems seem to contradict each other by means of what happens during and after death. She seems to be struggling with the religious belief of living eternity in the afterlife with God. Each poem concerning death gives a deeper look into what Dickinson was struggling with. It is interesting that no two poems dealt with death in the same way. One poem deals with the pain and anguish of death as seen in ââ¬Å"I like a look of Agonyâ⬠. The eyes glaze once ââ¬â and that is Death Impossible to feign The Beads opon the Forehead By homely Anguish strung. International Aviation Fuel Is Not Taxed - 971 Words
Goal 12.7 is measureable in part, one could make sure that all public procurement methods are in line with the legal standard, yet whether national policies and priorities are sustainable is objective. Goal 12.c is also similar, to measure it one would only have to have a list of harmful subsidies and cross them off when reversed or rationalized, yet this could fluctuate with which subsidies one considers harmful. For example, international aviation fuel is not taxed. Even though there is no direct exchange from a government to a public cooperation it could be considered a subsidy because it helps the aviation industry CITATION Dav03 l 1033 (Pearce, 2003). So to measure goal 12.c one would have to establish a baseline list of harmful subsidies. The goals above, which are recognized as measureable, are already being recorded. Goal 12.3, dealing with cutting food waste is already being measured all over the globe, including which phase of the food supply chain most food is being wasted. In higher income countries, consumers waste more where as in lower income countries food tends to be wasted in production CITATION Gus11 l 1033 (Gustavsson, Cederberg, Sonesson, 2011). Goal 12.4, relating to sound management of chemicals, is also being recorded. This goal is usually recorded on a more local basis, dealing with pollution within a certain area or body of water. a. The two methods of reporting in the parent companyââ¬â¢s currency are different due to usage of different rates of exchange. Under the first method, the spot rates are to be used. We will write a custom essay sample on Avila Auto Parts or any similar topic only for you Order Now Spot rates are the rates at which the transaction is carried out. This is normally a difficult approach and companies use the date on which the balance sheet and income statement is prepared. The spot is taken to be the rate of the balance sheet and other financial statements. The other method uses average rate of exchange of the period of reporting. In our case, using the two methods, we will have significant differences in the reported profits and losses. If we use the spot rate of balance sheet publication, the currency conversion factor will be 12000 pesos per dollar, whereas if we use average rate, the conversion will be done at 10,000 pesos per dollar. There will be a difference of 20 percent in the reporting. On the other hand, if the rate today has been less than the exchange rate at the beginning, the current reported figures would have been lower than those reported under first method. We should ideally use the method of spot rate at which payments are made. If it is not possible, the average rate would be better and consistent. Average can be taken for monthly figures or weekly rates to make it more accurate and representative of the realistic picture. As the income statement shows, the profits for the year were 25,000 million pesos in the local country. If it is translated to the parent companyââ¬â¢s reporting currency using the spot rate of income statement, that is 12,000 pesos = $1, we will have net profits of $2,083,333. If we use the average rate of the period, that is (8,000+12,000)/2 = 10,000 pesos per $1, we will have net profits of $2,500,000 or $2. 5 million. Under both the methods of reporting the same profits/income of the company to its parent company, the profits are quite different simply due to the currency difference and exchange rate variation over the period. The difference in profits reported is more than $0. 4 million or roughly 20 percent which may change the decisions taken at headquarters. Taking into consideration the differences in the exchange rates and conversion risk, the company should decide on a measure to select the rate of exchange to use for its reporting during the entire life of the organization. They should consistently use whatever they have decided to use over their entire life. b. Functional currency is the one in which the operational cash is generated and is normally the currency of the country where the operations are going on. If the currency of the operating country is not stable, it can not be considered as functional currency. The stability of currency means that the rate of inflation over three year period should be less than 100 percent. As in the given case, the rate of inflation is 50 percent, (from 8,000 ps per dollar to 12,000 ps per dollar), the functional currency will be peso as the operational cash flows are generated in pesos and the inflation is within the limits. If the inflation over the past two years reaches 150 %, the functional currency will be changed to the reporting currency of the parent company, which in our case is dollar. . Economic exposure for Avila can be seen by the given conversion rates and their variability over such a short period of time. Economic exposure is the effect of foreign currency rate changes to the cash flows and other measures of operational performance. The exposure for any company is affected by the industry it is operating in and the stability of the currency of its operating country and the parent company. If there is excess demand of pesos, it will push th e rates of pesos higher and vice versa. If the rate gets higher, that is there will be less pesos in a dollar, the performance in the parent companyââ¬â¢s report will be better than the situation when the exchange rate gets low. The two reporting methods will lead to significant differences in reported profits and losses to the parent company, from the operations in some other country. 3. Hedging can be a good option to protect the company against any unforeseen changes in the exchange rates. The company can make hedging I a number of ways to make itself protected against foreign exchange risk. Four positions are possible to provide such a protection using simple forward contracts and options. a. Long forward Under long forward position, the company at the operating country can take a long forward position to fix exchange rate (today) for a future date of transaction. Taking a long position means that the investor is agreeing to buy the underlying asset, at a specified price, agreed by both parties, on some future date. The contract has to be executed irrespective of what the conversion rate will be. Unlike options, none of the parties has the option to execute the contract or revoke it, but it is mandatory for both of them to carry it out. b. Short forward Short forward position can act equally well at the parent companyââ¬â¢s location. The parent company at the parent country can go to short forward position so that it can sell dollars to pesos at a rate specified today. Using both the positions they can hedge the overall loss and can be certain about the expected gains. Options provide a type of insurance against any unforeseen changes in exchange rate. The buyer of call option and the seller of put option, both have the right to exercise the option or to waste it. The maximum loss in wasting the option is restricted to the price of the option. In this way, the company can set a floor to its loss and can gain as much as it can. c. Long Call Long call allows the parent company to buy a right to buy at a specified rate at some future point in time. If the rate increases, the company will have the option to buy at a lower rate than the market going rate, if it goes down, the loss will be restricted to the price of the option and the gains can be as much as the rate goes down. . Short Put Short Put will allow the company at the operating country to enter into a position to sell a right to sell at a set rate. The working for this will be exactly in the opposite manner as the long call position. 4. Financial architecture affects the overall cost for the company. If the inflation is high and the interest rates are high for a high risk firm , the cost of obtaining financing from banks and other Financial Institutions (FIs) will be high. Equity financing or market financing will require a higher rate of return, but the firm may shift the payments to some future period. As for bank financing or debt financing, it will have to make payments to the lending institution within the given timeframe. The firms may choose to go for a certain debt to equity ratio to gain advantage of optimal capital structure to optimize their costs of capital or WACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital). 5. Euro currency is the use of currency in some other country. This in our case refers to storage, saving of pesos in the parent country where the currency in use is dollars. This will provide the company benefits in terms of advantage in domestic interest rate regulations and other barriers to free flow of cash. Firms participate in the euro currency markets to gain the benefits from exchange rate inefficiencies and under or over valuation of some currencies. If the investments are in the parent companyââ¬â¢s currency and the operations are in the local currency of country where operations are being carried out, the exchange rate plays a vital role when calculating returns on investments for the companyââ¬â¢s investments and funding by the parent company. If the domestic currency rises in operating country, the rate of return required should be higher than normal to overcome the exchange differences and vice versa. To overcome this difference and the problems due to fluctuating exchange rates, companies enter euro-currency markets where they can keep their money in parent companyââ¬â¢s currency and convert it to functional currency as and when needed. This provides them the opportunity to maintain the required base in terms of parent companyââ¬â¢s currency. 6. Other alternatives to run a firmââ¬â¢s fund-flow mechanism are to use various swaps in the form of interest rate swaps or foreign currency swaps. MNCs can go for unbundling of their costs at headquarters to affiliate companies of subsidiaries. In this way they can divide their costs to subsidiaries. Multinationals can go for transfer pricing mechanisms to avoid taxes on their overall operations. This can be done by pricing their internally traded goods for the purpose of moving profits to low tax nations. This will provide them an overall higher profitability. Companies can also create re-invoicing centers to avoid exchange rate fluctuations. The invoice currency will be the one used rather than the operating currency. This will reduce their exposure to currency and exchange rate risk. This will increase communication costs and to some extent create an overhead whereby the overall time delays and costs will be increased. MNCs can also transfer funds to their parent companies as dividends if the local conditions and regulatory framework is favorable. The major benefits of using different mechanisms can be obtained because of differences in the tax mechanisms and tax systems in different countries. Firms, by simply moving their profits from high tax region to a low tax region can save on their overall taxes provided the costs of moving are not high enough to make it unprofitable. Gangs and Hip-Hop free essay sample
In an atmosphere dominated by gang activity, It is evident that the most popular way of seeking freedom from this harsh environment of drugs and violence is self- expression through the popular culture of hip-hop. Whether it is dance, music, or even the fashion aspect of hip-hop, It seems to be the most common escape from such rough surroundings. It is also very apparent that many of these escapees actually make a living out of indulging themselves in the hospitable culture of hip- hop.In fact, many famous hip-hop dancers and music artists one might see In the media today have a history of gang affiliation. While the majority of these hip- hoppers choose to retain their roots of connections with gangs (a lot of rap artists flaunt the fact that they are/have been In a gang), one would be mistaken In saying that it is a much more favorable way of living life over being under such dangerous conditions as being a gang member in an active street gang. One outlet of hip-hop that Is used for self-expression is the art of hip-hop dance. Many popular dance crews originating from poverty-stricken areas have a history of gang affiliation. Interestingly enough, according to NAP radio, dance suppressed some of the lenience between rival gangs (Del Baric). Although It did not completely eliminate violence, dancing was a way for gangs to choose which one would pick the location for a fight. This may not seem like it is helping the cause too much, but it is in fact deteriorating some of the most extreme aspects of gang violence.Kenny Bermuda Is a specific example of this. Growing up, he was a gang member and now he has been on the hit show which showcases talented dance crews, Americas Best Dance Crew, along with his crew Rhythm City. Bermuda Is now attending college and owns his own dance school. Additionally, a group called Massive Monkeys (who also were featured on Americas Best Dance Crew) is a dance crew who have a history of gang affiliation. They now strive to teach high school kids that gangs and hip-hop do not always have a connection.Graffiti, although recognized in many countries to be vandalism which is a punishable crime, is another way of diverting ones focus from something other than gang activity which can be, In some situations, a lot less serious in terms of consequences. Graffiti is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked In any manner on property. In urban context, it is mostly seen In more public places Like subway stations or on the sides of buildings_ This is because graffiti artists, including gang members, tag these popular places to mark their territory and get an everyday audience admiring their works of art.An academic article called Urban Graffiti as Territorial Markers stated that a new trend appeared in 1970. Graf fiti writing had spread to the inner city. Almost all of the graffiti reports discovered for 1972 and half of those for 1971 were concerned with the newfound popularity of spray-painting among Inner-city youth (Lye Cyberpunks, 491 According to this, graffiti started trending in inner-city youth (in which many of this population is involved in gang activity) in the early sasss, around the same time that the whole hip-hop culture was established. This shows that the escapement of harsh gang activity in poor, ghetto neighborhoods through self- expression in hip-hop culture is and always has been one of the most prominent indicators of attitudes, behavioral dispositions, and social processes in settings where direct measurement is difficult (Lye and Sybaritic, 491). This is a direct indicator that at least some teenagers involved with gangs have made clear action of discontinuing their gang affiliation through self-expression of graffiti. It is also apparent that graffiti replaced gang violence in the sense that it decided which was the more dominant gang solely on the basis of who had marked their territory more. The music aspect of hip-hop culture is undoubtedly the most popular and most widely-distinguished part of this hospitable culture. It has made its way over the years into the mainstream media heard and seen on a daily basis, and in such has come the most acceptable component of hip-hop. Because of this, it has had a great affect for these refugees requesting removal from the gang environment. Not only does this take these inner-city kids out of their gang affiliations, but it can sometimes be made a career and take someone from rags to riches as it is the most successful part of hip-hop. Africa Bumboat, also known as the Grandfather of Hip Hop Culture and by his birth name Kevin Donovan, is living proof of this. Known as being instrumental in the development of hip hop, Bumboat, a founding member f a gang called the Savage Seven (later known as The Black Spades), is a hip-hop music artist who has produced 15 albums to date.He was known as being the warlord for the Black Spades meaning it was his Job to recruit members and expand turf of the gang. Basically he was the manager of this gang which controlled over 50 divisions in the state of New York alone. It is known as being one of the most renowned gangs in history. Bumboat would later use his leadership skills to turn those involved in the gang life into something more positive to the community. This cession began the development of what later became known as the Universal Zulu Nation, a group of socially and politically aware rappers, b-boys, graffiti artists, and other people involved in the hip-hop culture. Hip-hop music undoubtedly shaped Bumboat into the unselfish and better man he is today. Bumboat isnt the only example of this though. Many rappers heard in the mainstream media today have had a history of gang relation. Macs like 50 Cent, Young Jeez, and Snoop Dog, who have all made a name for themselves in the popular culture of music have all had the experience of being in a gang. But this is not the full list of successful rappers today that have shared that experience. In fact, hundreds of these relevant rappers have/ had some sort of gang affiliation. While a slight majority of these rappers take pride in knowing they have been dispersed in this hostile and harsh environment, they must all realize that it is a much better life to live than that of an active gang member. To conclude, it has come very obvious that self-expression through hip-hop culture is the most prominent way of evading gang-related activity.

What are the benefits of decriminalizing any drug free essay sample
What are the benefits of decontaminating any drug? A drug is not bad. A drug is a chemical compound. The problem comes in when people who take drugs treat them like a license to behave like an gasohol, said Frank Zap, the American composer and rock musician and I absolutely agree with him. The dawn of the twenty first century has ushered in a new age of optimism and wonder. Despite the proclamations of television, all is not in well in our part of the world. Our societies have waged a war on drugs, but this war Is far from being won. Being fought against our own citizens and citizens abroad, an International effort to eradicate drug production and use has undoubtedly failed leaving in its wake social unrest and political chaos. Assault, property crime, homicidal tendencies, racial and economic normalization, murder, corruption and many other undesirable things are burning through society fanned by the drug wars cold and inhuman policies. We will write a custom essay sample on What are the benefits of decriminalizing any drug? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In addition to these problems there are the Initial problems that drug users incur on themselves and society; the same ones the drug war was supposed to eliminate. Prohibition is an old idea that is not practically attainable in a democratic society that ales individual rights. short generalization+quotation For one, experiments with the prohibition of alcohol failed miserably and cost many people their lives. If the justification behind the drug war is human health and wellbeing, as governments would have us believe, then refraining from using the police to murder and spy on our citizens would be a good start to solving the problem. A form of regulated legalization of drugs would be a tolerant middle ground that recognizes the inevitability of drug use and strives to make it as safe as possible. Those who are pointing to the legal status of alcohol and tobacco need to understand that argument is as much in favor of prohibition as is in legalization. Yes, alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous than some drugs such as cannabis, which is currently illegal in most countries, but on the other hand it is easy to see how much of a burden these substances are on society. Tobacco In particular has huge death rates which are undoubtedly due to its high user rates and easy accessibility. This obviously creates a huge burden on the health services particularly those that are to privatized. Similarly, while removing the illegal status of some drugs may reduce enforcement costs, they will not be eliminated and substantial costs will be created in enforcing various laws regarding driving under the influence and selling substances to minors. It Is far more reasonable to look at meld-way solutions to this problem like decentralization of certain types of drugs, marijuana In particular. The decentralization of drugs in Portugal provides an interesting example of this. Drug rates have not increased dramatically and more resources have gone to treating edicts, providing drug consumption rooms, needle exchange programs and other harm reduction strategies. I hope you know that in 2001 the Portuguese government executed a strategy of decontaminating the use and possession of illicit street drugs. The Portuguese policy holds that the theory was quite simple: focusing on treatment infections and afflictions. Five years later, the number of deaths from street drug overdoses dropped. Now instead of being put into prison, people, who have drug- addiction are going to treatment centers and theyre learning how to control their rug usage or getting off drugs entirely. Under the Portuguese plan, penalties for people caught dealing and trafficking drugs are unchanged; drug-dealers and drug- pushers are still Jailed and subjected to fines depending on the crime. Also, I want to mention that critics were wrong in their warnings that decontaminating drugs would make Lisbon a drug Mecca. I think that drug decentralization did reach its primary goal in Portugal the reducing the health consequences of drug use and did not lead to Lisbon becoming a drug tourist destination. Drug legalization removes all criminal analyses for producing, selling and using drugs; no country has tried it. In contrast, decentralization, as practiced in Portugal, eliminates severe prison sentence for drug users but maintains criminal penalties for dealers. The lucrative market for drugs is demand-led and millions of people demand illegal drugs. Making the production, supply and use of some drugs illegal creates a vacuum into which organized crime moves. Legalization forces organized crime from the drugs trade, starves them of income and enables us to regulate and control the market (I. E. Restriction, licensing, laws on sales to minors, advertising regulations etc. ). Recent research shows that nearly half of all 15-16 year olds have used an illegal drug. Up to one and a half million people use ecstasy every weekend. Amongst young people, under the current system, illegal drug use is seen as normal. Intensifying the war on drugs is not reducing demand. In Holland, where cannabis laws are far less harsh, drug usage is amongst the lowest in Europe. Legalization accepts that drug use is normal and that it is a social issue, not a criminal Justice one. How we deal with t is up to all of us to decide. Also I am a firm believer that I am in control of my own actions. So whether I choose to do drugs or not is my choice. I do not need the government to make an informed decision about whats best for me. If the government legalized cocaine or heroin it does not mean that I am going to run out and pollute my body and mind with either one, but if I choose to do so, its my decision as an adult. But with that said; it is an adult decision, so it should not be available to children, Just as alcohol is intended for adults who are 21 and older. All in all, there is no evidence to show that prohibition is succeeding. The question we must ask ourselves is, What are the benefits of criminality any drug? If, after examining all the available evidence, we find that the costs outweigh the benefits, then we must seek an alternative policy. Decontaminating is not a panacea but it does allow us to address many of the problems associated with drug use, and those created by prohibition. As I think, the time has come for an effective and pragmatic drug policy and our government should administer it. call for an action + question Flavor K. , 962

4 Expert PSAT Calculator Tips + Approved Calculators
4 Expert PSAT Calculator Tips + Approved Calculators SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips PSAT math can be intimidating, so it would be nice to be able to have some computerized help. But can you use a calculator on the PSAT? Yes, you can, though only on the second of the two Math sections on the PSAT.But what kind of calculator can you use, and when does it make sense to use a calculator on the PSAT? Read on for the complete list of approved calculators for PSAT test day and our top tips for using your calculator effectively. Can You Use a Calculator on the PSAT? Like the SAT, the PSAT has four sections: Reading, Writing, Math (No Calculator), and Math (Calculator). The No Calculator Math section is 25 minutes long, and has 17 questions, while the Calculator section is 45 minutes long and has questions. As the name suggests, the only time during the PSAT where you can use your calculator is on thefinal Calculator mathsection. According to College Board, most questions on the Calculator Math section can be answered without using a calculator, but a calculator could be useful on some questions. Translated from the College Board's cautious official language: you absolutely should use a calculator when itââ¬â¢s called for to make your life easier, but donââ¬â¢t over-complicate questions by using a calculator when it would be quicker to solve by hand. For example, itââ¬â¢s faster (and presents lower chances of error) to use your calculator to multiply 34 x 174. However, itââ¬â¢s much faster to solve an equation like 3x + 4y = 17, 4x + 8y = 26 by hand than to use your graphing calculator to do it. Approved Calculators for PSAT Test Day The College Board allows three types of calculators on the PSAT: four-function calculators, scientific calculators, and graphing calculators. Four-function calculators are so-called because they can basically just do four things: add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Although you could theoretically use just a four-function calculator on the PSAT, it's not recommended, most likely because four-function calculators usually lack useful features like parentheses and entry lines. The only advantages of four-function calculators are that they tend to be relatively inexpensive and take up less space. But honestly, the disadvantages of not being able to see what you just entered into the calculator far outweigh the benefits. All scientific calculators are permitted for use on the PSAT. A scientific calculator has all the features of a four-function calculator plus a few other useful things. Key functions included in all scientific calculators are parentheses, pi, and trigonometric functions, as can be seen below: AJC1/Flickr Parentheses in particular are great because you can use them to make sure your calculations happen in the right order. For example, ((15 x 19) ââ¬â (13/2)) /100 is a whole lot easier to enter in all at once with parentheses, instead of having to break it up into its individual parts and then re-use the parts; every extra calculation entry you do introduces the chance of more error. The final type of calculator you can bring to the PSAT is a graphing calculator. Graphing calculators are great because they will definitely have features like entry lines as well as everything a scientific calculator has. They can also be helpful in visualizing solutions to linear equations ââ¬â for instance, if you want to find out where the two equations cross, you can just look at the graph to get the coordinates The only problem with graphing calculators is that their multifunctionality can trick students into using them when not using a calculator would be faster. Avoid this trap by using a graphing calculator as you take practice tests and challenging yourself to question each time you use the calculator if itââ¬â¢s really necessary, or if itââ¬â¢s taking up more time than itââ¬â¢s saving. Unlike with scientific calculators, not all models of graphing calculator are allowed under the PSAT calculator rules. Below is a chart of acceptable PSAT graphing calculators, sorted by brand. Most of these guidelines are common sense, like that you canââ¬â¢t use a calculator that makes noise or a calculator that can access the Internet. A few of the other qualifications, though, are less obvious, like the fact that you canââ¬â¢t use a calculator that requires an electrical outlet. If your calculator meets any of the following criteria, you cannot use it on the PSAT: Itââ¬â¢s part of a portable/handheld computer, laptop, electronic writing pad, or pocket organizer. Shockingly, you can't use your computer while taking the PSAT. It has QWERTY (i.e., typewriter) keypads as part of hardware or software (e.g., TI-92 Plus, Voyage 200). You also canââ¬â¢t use any ââ¬Å"hardware peripheralsâ⬠with an otherwise approved calculator (e.g. an external keyboard or LCD screen) It has pen-input/stylus/touch-screen capability (e.g., Palm, PDAs, Casio ClassPad) It has wireless or Bluetooth capability It paper tapes It can "talk" (terrifying) or make noise It requires an electrical outlet It can access the Internet It has cell phone capability or audio/video recording capability. No using your cellphone calculator on the PSAT! It has a digital audio/video player It has a camera or scanning capability No external view screens allowed on yourPSAT calculator! (Joe Haupt/Flickr) 4 PSAT Calculator Tips Now that you know what your options are for approved calculators for PSAT testing, let's go through a few key tips to help you use your calculatoreffectively on test day. Tip 1: Bring an Approved Calculator to the Test Itââ¬â¢s better to have a calculator you can use and end up not needing it than to need a calculator and not have one. The same thing goes for making sure itââ¬â¢s an approved calculator; thereââ¬â¢s no point in bringing a calculator with you that you canââ¬â¢t use. Tip 2: Be Familiar With Your Calculator One of the main reasons to use a calculator is that it enhances your speed and accuracy on the test. If youââ¬â¢re using a calculator youââ¬â¢ve never used before, youââ¬â¢ll be slower and more prone to errors, no matter how fancy the calculator is. Avoid test-day peril by using the calculator you plan to use on the PSAT for your everyday schoolwork and homework as much as possible. That way, when PSAT time comes, youââ¬â¢ll be comfortable with your calculator. Tip 3: Check the Calculator's Entry Line When youââ¬â¢re doing calculations during the test, it can be easy to get caught up in the rush to finish the test in time and accidentally hit "8" instead of "5," or "x" instead of "-". To limit the impact of these errors on you, double check the entry line before hitting ââ¬Å"enterâ⬠to make sure you havenââ¬â¢t entered in the wrong number or operation. Double-checking the entry line is particularly important if youââ¬â¢re not using a graphing calculator that keeps a running log of all the calculations youââ¬â¢ve done. Tip 4: Know When Not to Use Your Calculator Especially if you have a graphing calculator, it can seem like the easier thing to do is to let the calculator work for you. Meticulously entering in an equation into the calculator and getting it to solve it for you, however, can take way more time than just doing it by hand would. This doesnââ¬â¢t mean you shouldnââ¬â¢t use the calculator at all; rather, use it as a supplement to your skills, rather than as a replacement. Be warned, you shouldn't rely on calculator apps to do the hard work for you. PSAT proctors have the right to inspect your calculator and delete all programmed apps on there, and if youââ¬â¢d grown accustomed to using apps to solve problems, youââ¬â¢ll be in hot water. Hot water: beautiful to watch spewing from a geyser, less beautiful to be in. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Now that you've gotten your calculator figured out, what's left to do?
